| American Tourist In April of 2004, Travelers Aid and Homeless Assistance Center of Oklahoma City began a new fundraising tradition by implementing a new special event, American Tourist. This event benefits homeless families with children. The event is a fun-filled evening complete with live band, dancing, live and silent auctions, and food and beverages. Party patrons are encouraged to come dressed for their favorite tourist/vacation spot. The funds raised from this event support our Family Outreach Program which transitions homeless families out of shelters and into transitional housing. While in the program, the families work towards self-sufficiency by getting jobs, getting better paying jobs, going back to school, taking classes to increase their skills, attending parenting classes, learning to budget and so on. Typically families participate in this program for one year to eighteen months. At the completion of the program, the goal is for families to be self-sufficient and ready to move into permanent housing.
